Hello HAAC

Dear HAAC
I am a teacher living in HCMC from England, UK.
I have a developing interest in observing the sky at night. I don't have a telescope, I'm not sure where to buy one in HCMC?!
Are there many English speakers in the club? My Vietnamese is not so good!
With a telescope ís it possible to see much from HCMC, ỏr ís light pollution too much?!
I am also looking for a good website so I can find positions of planets for our part of the sky and when/where to look....
Do you have any trips where I can learn more?!!

T o o many questions, I know!

Look forward to hearing from you

Thanks

Jon

Dear Mr.Jon,

Welcome to our club! I am very glad that you decided to join our club. Language is not the problem that separates the people who love astronomy like us. As a matter of fact, there are some members of the club who can speak English quite well. Back to your questions, it is probably possible to observe the night sky in HCMC. Our club usually have regular obvervational parties that you can take part in, enjoy and also gain your experience about astronomy. And for the telescopes, they are around 1 million to 3 million VND (the amateur ones); in case you want to buy one, we will help you . If you have any question, just create a topic in this section (HAAC and astro clubs, astronomers around the world), we will answer as soon as possible.
PS: You can ask as many as you wish :D. And...the software that may help you to study the sky is here: http://stellarium.org/.
Take care,

Lupin.

Dear Jon,

Glad to hear from you. You’re a teacher and you also have a developing interest in observing the night sky. That’s great. We have the same passion.

If you want to buy a telescope, our club will guide you some models to weigh. You may visit “Quang Tam optical devices shop”: No 15 Cach Mang Thang 8 Street, District 1.

Our club now has some hand-made telescopes (both reflecting and refracting telescope) with objective lens diameter up to 250mm. Besides, we also use other telescopes (such as Celestron 11 inches, Meade 4 inches, etc), binoculars, rotational sky map, laser flashlight, etc) to observe the mysterious sky.

In Ho Chi Minh City, both air pollution and light pollution will limit the observation’s ability. But in a clear sky with no moon, you will be able to find positions and trajectories of planets in specific time. Our club’s willing to help you. However, to enjoy an integral sky observation, you must go to mountainous or coastal regions far from Ho Chi Minh City (with no air and light pollution, in dry season).

On 27th April 2011, Our club will hold a sidewalk observation in Phu Nhuan High school; No 5, Hoàng Minh Giám Street, Phu Nhuan District.

Hope to see you in this event. And we will exchange views on our concerns about astronomy.

Do not hesitate to contact us (mail: hcmc.astroclub@gmail.com, or phone Mr Duy: 0909768379) if you have any further questions.

WOW! Thanks for all your replies so quickly

lupin2410 - I thought so! The amateur telescope is all I need, and the price is reasonable. I see the software you recommend. I have something similar on my ipad and it is quite complicated. I will try Stellarium.

MhermexX - Thankyou for your welcome

ilovely142 - The event sounds great on April 27th, I would love to come along and meet your club and learn more. What time does the event start?

Also guys tell me your real names please! So I know who to talk to if I come.

PS: Any members bring their young children to your meetings? My daughter is two and a half...

Dear Mr.Jon,
One of our purposes is bringing astronomy to youth (including children), so you can bring your daughter whenever you want. She will be interested in astronomy soon...
Have a nice day,
Lupin.
